Another week

Another week is flying by.

Deadlines, a reading and signings are keeping me
writing and busy.

My critique group was over the top today.
We had 12 writers show up....amazing.

If this keeps up we'll have to split up by
genres and experience. But when school starts
I think the numbers of writers coming will
decrease. Still it's a great feeling to know
we are sharing our work and our passion.

Write on!

Okay, I admit it. I play games on the computer
and work three puzzles in the newspaper everyday.
Lucky for me I call it research.

What does it take to be a puzzleholic? Patience,
persistence and a darn good pen. Yep, pen.
I can't imagine using a pencil except for
3-6 star Sudoku puzzles. The light pencil
line disppears and smears. Give me bold pen
strokes crossed out and Xed anyday.

When I need to relax, I puzzle. When I need
to destress I puzzle, when I need to play, I puzzle.
Well, you get the picture.

I even had work-for-hire creating 18 puzzles. Gee, wasn't
that too bad. Although after 6 weeks, I will say writing
a rhyming picture book seemed grand compared
to dreaming up one more new format. And don't forget
I have to make the answer sheets, too. I love it when
my writing friends tell me just the thought of making
a puzzle gives them a headache. Nothing like a novelty niche.

Puzzle on....

Book Launch News

Hurray! Today was the Book Launch for my first
published children's picture book, Happy Birthday
to Whooo? A Baby Animal Riddle Book

What a party! Friends, old and new, acquaintances
and family showed up to help me get this new phase
of my book publishing career off the ground.

There were the stacks of my books, balloons, and even a
birthday cake graciously provided by Barnes and Noble.

The turnout of buyers was great enough for a sellout!
Yes, all the books Barnes and Noble had were sold in
1 1/2 hours. Barnes and Noble was thrilled and so was I.

What a fabulous event for me. I can't wait until my
next signing and READING at a local children's store
on July 29.

Come, listen and enjoy!

Five Days Until Blast Off!

The clock is ticking and I am counting!

Saturday is the Book Launch for my first
published picture book. I have plenty others
written, but this is the first one to be published.
And is there every anything like the first time?
I doubt it.

Today people told me,"I'll see you on Saturday."
I grin and say, "Thanks so much." But inside
the butterflies flap and flutter.

I consider this a once-in-a-life time event.
Something I've dreamed of and am now accomplishing.
It's humbling, overwhelming, exciting, and nerve
wracking all at the same time.

Staying busy helps me avoid too much attention
to the upcoming magic on Saturday.

Wednesday, I will take my mother to see the nice
display of my books the local Barnes and Noble
has made to advertise me and the Book Launch.

Sounds like homework!

Just received an offer of work for hire for
Gareth Stevens.

I will be writing a 32 page nonfiction book for
fifth graders with a 2-3 grade vocabulary.

I have a celebrity's name to write about for the
series, Entertainment Superstars.

All of this is quite remarkable since the contact came
from attending the ALA meeting in San Antonio in January.
Equipped with business cards and writing samples, I was
ready if the opportunity presented itself and it did!

After a reminder phone, which I was told to make in April,
the whole idea had rather slipped my mind. But now I find
I'm in the learning process for a different genre and hopefully
one I can conquer for future work for hire assignments.

You lose if you don't schmooze!

Esme Excels

Are you familiar with Planet Esme?

This blog by Esme Codell is a treasure for
authors, parents, and readers of all ages.
Esme groups books by subject and corresponds
the subject with an event, the time of year,
or a just plain fun.

I have put books on hold at the library from
reading her recommendations in her blog.
Have discovered art and text that is overwhelming
in beauty, whimsy, rhyme and rhythm.

Instead of trying to decide what I might like to read
and hope it is worth my time, I use Esme's advice
and no longer hope for the best. I know I will be
reading the best.

Her website is
From there you can find her Book a Day Blog

Read well and often!
